CRIME PREVENTION REACHES A NEW LEVEL
Statistics released Thursday (22nd November 2007) indicate the level of vehicle and plant theft in Ireland has reached startling proportions and creates a huge cost to the Irish economy. The figures were released at the launch of state-of-the-art tracking technology, Omniscout, which was attended by Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan.
Omniscout’s patented GPS products are the standard technology for USA and Canadian Law Enforcement Agencies including the FBI, US Marshals, ATF and DEA for the past 2 years.
Worrying figures show that in excess of 350 motor vehicles are stolen every week in Ireland (source – An Garda Siochana 2006 Annual Report) and nine out of 10 cars are stolen following the theft of keys resulting from a burglary. Most stolen cars valued over €70k are taken by organised criminal units who export the vehicles or its parts to the UK and beyond. To make matters worse, 40% are vehicles are not recovered, a cost of just over €203m to Irish insurance companies.
€150m of plant machinery is lost as a result of theft annually. Omniscout have tracked stolen plant machinery from Ireland as far away as Australia. Most, if not all stolen machinery is exported to the UK. Authorities are currently bracing themselves for an increase in plant theft in the next 2-3 years as construction for the 2012 Olympics increases demand. Also high on the thieves agenda are minibuses and buses.
Omniscout has been developed specifically for People and Asset Protection. It is the most accurate and smallest tracker device in the world and is the first GPS/GSM/GPRS based device to offer patented Advanced Assisted GPS (AAGPS). This ensures accurate location and tracking information even in areas where the GPS signal is obstructed such as in buildings, underground parking, in containers and other hereto “untrackable” locations.
Minster for Justice, Brian Lenihan; “An Garda Síochána does tremendous work in investigating crimes and in mounting prosecutions where suspects are identified. However, it is also vitally important that property owners take all reasonable steps to protect their assets – especially where these are mobile, valuable and vulnerable. There is a very considerable economic cost incurred by Irish individuals and businesses from car crime each year and stolen vehicles are frequently used in carrying out subsequent serious crimes or quickly shipped out of the State for sale. I welcome the introduction of technologies that reduce the risk of crime and increase the likelihood of tracing stolen property and I appeal to owners to make every effort to make their vehicles as tamper proof as possible.”
According to Graham Gibson, Sales Director, Omniscout;
“With our pedigree in Law Enforcement, we at Omniscout are delighted to offer Irish consumers the smallest most accurate and affordable GPS tracking technology available in the World today.”
“Our partnership with O2 in Ireland allows our technology to work in 193 countries worldwide thus ensuring our customers have cutting edge technology and peace of mind whilst managing the Security of their Staff and Mobile Assets.”
